A charmed life: Reclusive copper heiress' jewelry brings $21million at New York City auction

Signed pieces of Cartier and Tiffany jewelry belonging to a late Montana copper mining heiress have sold for nearly $21million at a New York City auction.

Christie's said Tuesday's sale from the estate of Huguette Clark had caught the attention of collectors worldwide.

The star of the collection, a rare pink cushion-cut 9-carat diamond ring, sold for nearly $16million.

Charmed: An art deco diamond and multi-gem bracelet with animal motifs by Cartier, circa 1925, sold for $92,500 - over three times Christie's estimate

The auction house had estimated the collection of 17 pieces would bring between $9million to $12million.

But many of the pieces, including the stunning pink diamond, sold for double, and occasionally - in the case of a single-strand pearl and diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co - as much as eight times Christie's estimates.

Pieces from the art deco period dominated the lot, such as Ms Clark's collection of gold and diamond Cartier bracelets.

Photo frames by the luxury label, marked by onyx, turquoise and diamond accents, went to the highest bidders at $74,500 each - well above their $4,000 to $7,000 estimates.

The pieces give some insight into the life of one of America's most mysterious heiresses.

Ms Clark, who was 104 when she died last year at New York's Beth Israel Medical Center, was notoriously shy and reclusive during her years.

Her father was U.S. Senator William A Clark, once one of America's wealthiest businessmen, building a fortune from mining copper and railroads.

But his daughter - reputedly the nation's fourth richest woman - was the subject of much speculation and intrigue.

Aged 84, Huguette moved from her Fifth Avenue apartment in 1991 and spent the rest of her life in hospitals. In the 1990s the painting vanished from the apartment.

Her longtime physician had signed a statement describing his then-102-year-old patient as 'mentally and physically alert'.

This came three years after she signed a will cutting her family out of any inheritance and planning an art museum in her Santa Barbara, California home.

She had signed two wills in 2005, aged 98. The first left everything to her family, while the second, which she signed six weeks later, excluded her family.

Instead, it outlined plans for the museum and left $36million to her nurse and large gifts to her godchild, doctor, attorney and accountant.

Katie Holmes takes mother Kathleen to Cartier Mansion reopening at NYFW - Daily Mail

In a tribute to building on one's history, the Cartier Mansion threw a reopening party on Wednesday night after a two-and-a-half-year renovation.

And as a guest at the Manhattan fête, Katie Holmes followed in much the same tradition.

Wearing a frilly gold-coloured gown, the 37-year-old posed alongside her mother Kathleen Holmes, for whom an elegant black and white pantsuit did the trick.

The ex-Mrs Tom Cruise's dress was covered in green, blue and gold stitching that formed various natural patterns, such as butterflies, raindrops, and the sun.

Her hair was in an elaborate updo, giving a full view of the Dawson's Creek actress' large hoop earrings, which along with a gold bracelet and several rings accessorised the outfit.

Meanwhile, the Toledo native's mother augmented her ensemble with a white formal scarf tied neatly at her midriff, as well as with a black purse. Where hoops served her daughter, she opted for pearl earrings.

Katie Holmes led the star studded red carpet at a NYFW party thrown by Cartier. The former Dawson's Creek star wowed the crowd in a stunning gown by Valentino.

The floor sweeping dress came in a nude color palette and it was intricately embroidered with beads. We love the loose, billowing silhouette and bohemian vibe that the Italian brand does oh so well. Katie gets two thumbs up from the Fashion Finder team!

Her custom frock isn't available anywhere online, but we've rounded up some alternatives below that will help you capture her look.

Zachary Quinto, ever dapper, arrived for the re-unveiling of the 5th Avenue and 52nd Street shop wearing a navy suit over a floral shirt.

Chloë Grace Moretz wore a rather busy outfit indeed. Strikingly heavy blue eye makeup matched the eastern bluebirds on her dress' black field.

The birds' red bellies, as well as orange tendrils and an orange hem, added even more colour to the dress' surface.

The 19-year-old's blonde hair had been hauled over to one side of her head and cascaded onto her right shoulder.

A pair of ankle-strap stilletos and what appeared to be a diamond bracelet rounded out the look as she posed for the camera.

Taylor Schilling's Grecian white dress had a plunging neckline that drew attention to the eye medallion she wore along with a solitaire necklace.

Holding a silver clutch and letting her platinum blonde hair down, she let one of her shapely legs peek out from the perilously high slit of her gown.

Ellie Goulding, meanwhile, wore a feather-themed dark blue dress with cleavage down to her midriff and a hem just below the knee.

A mélange of alternating netted or feathered sections found some contrast in simple, gold-coloured ankle-strap stilettos.

Her wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders as the Burn singer gave her best smouldering stare to the camera.

Kelly Bensimon, continuing the trend of women wearing white at the Wednesday night event, donned a white dress of her own with three sets of frills - not including those on the cuffs at her elbows.

She was a mound of smiles as she posed alongside a besuited John Demsey, the Executive Group President of The Estée Lauder Companies.

Sienna Miller was a true showstopper, the top of her broderie anglaise white dress reaching a perilous degree of sheerness.

A tangle of bracelets on her left wrist, she held a gold-coloured clutch in her right, matching her gold-coloured platform heels.

Earrings glimmered from behind her wavy blonde hair.

Sofia Coppola posed in a somewhat boxy white tunic over black slacks and gold-coloured shoes. Her silver necklace, bracelet and rings were set with light blue stones.

Rooney Mara looked remarkably on-brand at the event. Her dark lipstick and slicked-back black hair emphasised her gaunt, sharp-edged complexion.

Her small black zip-down jacket was left mostly open over a black dress so sheer her bra and underpants were entirely visible through it.

The undergarments framed her impressively toned midriff, and the dress' translucence allowed a glimpse at her pencil-thin legs, which ankle-strap stilettos made appear even longer than they already were.

In 1917, Pierre Cartier bought the location of his flagship shop by forking over a $1 million pearl necklace from his own brand.

Maisie Plant, who'd coveted and got the jewellery, was the wife of financier Morton Plant, who conceded the property to Cartier in exchange for the addition to his wife's collection.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rejiggering of the Cartier Mansion was undertaken by Thierry Despont, the man behind the latest refurbishment of the Ritz in Paris.
