I was interested to read the unexpected costs of being a fashion blogger on fashionista.com this morning. However, while it is true that there are costs involved - the level of which are exclusive to those who are in the pocket of Anna Wintour.
To those of us who operate on a non American scale, the costs are simple - your time and your wages. I pay all my own travel. So everytime you see a post here that has required me to nip to London to cover an event or a launch - its at the expense of me. However I really don't mind doing this because its worth it to get the scoop for the site.
The bigger expenses are annoying though. I have to make sure that I constantly have access to internet that is fast and reliable which means making sure I spend money to do that, I have to replace any tech stuff that threatens not to work - I cannot have a camera fail me at fashion week or a moody ipad that I can't film on. So if it doesn't work then replaced it gets and I don't have a fancy tech team behind me to fix anything or replace it for free. Oh well!
Then there are the stranger and more annoying costs. A few years back - google attempted to make all bloggers pay for content and images that went on the blog. It wasn't a massive amount but it was enough to make me question if I wanted to continue. I did find a way around it which was to delete older blog posts to make more room. So a lot of the shittier posts from 2008 bit the dust. Which is sad because I wrote those in a time and at a place in my life that it makes me smile to think about. I started this then when I was in art college sitting in the library in Limerick - I'll never get that work back again. Which is sad to think about. However, it worked for a bit before google dropped the whole idea. This was not before I had decided to hand over their blood money and undermine the whole idea of a free blog. Luckily, the payment didn't go through and then they dropped the idea. Hurrah! But at the time it was annoying - highly.
Some of the complaints were laughable though. I'm sorry but I don't blame my blog for my interest and purchases in Prada. Mainly because there are none. If I do buy designer - then it happens because I've had a bonus that month and its been good to me! Some of the bigger bloggers that appear front row and center complain that the upkeep of their wardrobes is a blog issue and expense - as if. Come off it. Don't even get me started on those who complain about paying for assistants either.
All of my 'assistants' have been mates of mine who I am thrilled to share the experience with and who are equally delighted to be with me experiencing it. If they take a few pictures for me then so be it! They are paid with pints and laughter in local bars and I am right there with them getting smashed. Its one of the more fun parts of being a blogger.
My pay from this blog is few and far between. It mainly comes in the form of access. But then, so be it. I'm still having fun with this thing almost six years on from when it started.
