Another Thursday Movie Picks, another all in the family edition. This time it's Father-Daughter relationships.
Interstellar is a flawed film, it's far too expository and Anne Hathaway's monologue about love transcending time or dimensions or whatever is complete gibberish but there's no denying that Nolan's Interstellar is truly cinematic. However, for all the great visuals and spectacular sights the film's beating heart is the father (Matthew Mcconaughey) and daughter (Mackenzie Foy) relationship. You have to have a black heart not to well up when Cooper (Mcconaughey) watches his daughter grow up millions of miles away.
I decided to go down the route how death affects a father-daughter relationship and for this I picked Mystic River. Kate (Emmy Rossum) is one of few things that survived from Jimmy's (Sean Penn) first marriage. So as an the eldest daughter she is an obvious favourite and Jimmy is over protective of her, he hates her boyfriend and allows bad blood to judge the kid (Kate and her boyfriend have to see each other in secret). When she is brutally murdered, Jimmy is left distraught. Mystic River is a great film, one of Eastwood's best. The film uses Kate's passing as a way to show Kate's importance to Jimmy and uses it show how strong their relationship was.
I suppose this counts....An East Asian classic. I won't say any more at risk of ruining it for those who haven't seen it...not for lovers of octopi. The movie is Oldboy, by the way.
