Song Review: Melanie C Drops Her Armor, Finally Comfortable in Her Skin on "Who I Am" Single

Before you listen to her latest single, be sure to experience Version Of Me, the seventh studio and most recent album from multi-platinum selling solo artist and former Spice Girls member Melanie C.

...

Fresh off the... well, heels... of last year's "High Heels", the sporty chartreuse now embraces her strength and individuality, while acknowledging her vulnerability and mistakes on "Who I Am". The disco-tinged, synth-heavy effort serves as the official lead single off the artist's upcoming, similarly-titled eighth studio album.

"Who I Am" finds Melanie C addressing her past, admitting to the times she would remain quiet or adopt a persona that never felt authentic. As time has gone by, as she drops her defense armor, she has learned there's no longer a reason to hide. She reflects on her growth, the courage she has developed, and now fully appreciates the reflection in the mirror.

While some may not like this new version of Melanie C, she does not view it as an issue slowing her down. She persists. "No, I've got nothing left to hide, I'm comfortable with what’s inside, you think you've known me all this time, but the real me is mine," she belts over 80s-inspired beats.

Since her 1999 debut solo album Northern Star, the artist has consistently evolved with the shifts in music trends. From the 90s neon-lit dancefloor ("I Turn To You) to the rock genre ("Next Big Superstar"), from straightforward pop ("Think About It") to incorporating electronic beats ("Anymore"), Melanie C has thrived in every sonic environment. "Who I Am" continues that creative winning streak for an artist somehow still trying to shake off her Spice Girls past.

In this current time of uncertainty and fear, being sure of one's self is critical. "Who I Am" is the exact brand of uplifting, inspiring brand of pop we need as a distraction. The message of self-discovery and idea of constant learning, paired with infectious, moody production, not only helps to lift Melanie C's spirits... it lifts our as well.
