"Thief" by Alice Chater - Single Review

Bored with the modern pop landscape?

Don’t worry, so is 23-year-old singer-songwriter-actress-model Alice Chater.

After setting YouTube ablaze this past year with intricately choreographed visuals for her unique brand of throwback pop, the London-based artist eventually caught the eye of Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am. The connection eventually aided Chater with snagging a stateside recording deal with Capitol Records (she apparently had a handful of labels engaged in a bidding war), getting her one step closely to finally cracking the mainstream ceiling.

Chater’s most recent serving, the dangerously enchanting and infectious “Thief”, is a signal of the artist putting her best foot forward on her path toward radio domination. Produced by heavyweights Rami and Carl Falk (Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande), the tropical-tinged love song finds Chater caught off-guard by an instant attraction to a new significant other. Sneaking in, stealing her heart, the artist is left to wonder if the romance is meant for just one night, or one destined to grow with time.

Opening with details of the romantic pursuit, acknowledging the new obsession, the artist ultimately sheds light on a real-life, on-and-off-again relationship. “You stole my heart, just like a thief, I guess you'll always have a part of me, I said give it back, it's not yours to keep, can't help myself, I'm falling for a thief,” she delicately sings on the golden chorus, alluding to the idea of having fallen head over heels in love against her own wishes.

By searching for positive buried deep beneath a sea of negative, “Thief” ultimately becomes a track detailing heartache, juxtaposed by upbeat, bouncy production. Think “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn. The emotive effort is easily one of Chater’s strongest, correcting a recent “anti-pop” trend that mistakenly chooses to diminish and discredit the colorful history of the genre. Instead, she is making a case for tried-and-true formulas never failing.

With calming and captivating vocals at the forefront, alongside polished production and pleasant subject matter, "Thief" teeters on highlighting Chater’s own brand but with an emphasis on a self-described influence by classic pop artists such as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. Those artists were able to deliver genre-crossing hits, supported by strong vocal and visual performances. By channeling that same diva energy, Chater is introducing herself as equally fearless, capable, and studious.

Oh, and be sure to educate yourself with Chater's previous stellar releases... like "Heartbreak Hotel"

... and the Kylie Minogue-channeling "Hourglass"

... Oh yeah, and her flawless interpretation of "Hung Up" by Madonna
